This week, Tom Bilyeu posted this picture on Twitter sharing five steps to meet growth-minded people. Bilyeu, the entrepreneur behind Quest Nutrition and Impact Theory, is passionate about helping people achieve their potential.
Bilyeu’s five steps are:
- Be the kind of person driven people want to be around.
- Do things that have an element of competition.
- Pursue any passion that gets you out and about in groups.
- Join social groups that self-identify as being about mindset and personal improvements.
- Introduce yourself to as many people in these situations as possible.
If you’ve been following along, you know I’m passionate about having a growth mindset and working on personal development. But it’s been a struggle for me to meet other like-minded people. The truth is that I just don’t relate to most people my age. I’m not going out and partying or planning my next EDM festival, I’m going for a hike or working on my craft. At this age, being nose deep in drugs can be “cooler” than nose deep in a book, and that’s a disappointing reality.
So I have a smaller, tight crew. People on the same path with relationships built on trust.
But I have put an emphasis on meeting more like-minded people and I think Bilyeu’s steps are a great starting place.
My only addition would be to not only introduce yourself to people in these situations but to find a way to get below the surface level. I’m Tom, I’m in sales, blah blah blah. The way to make real connections is to go a layer deeper. Grab a coffee after your SoulCycle class or pottery workshop and get to know them. Be vulnerable and authentic and people will do the same.
But don’t forget step #1 – be the kind of person driven people want to be around.
That’s one of the great benefits of running Millennial Momentum. It tells people about who I am, what I’m about. It’s a magnet for other people who feel the same way. I met with three different people this week that I met in some way through my podcast or blog and it’s become a gift that keeps on giving.
So if you’re having a tough time finding like-minded people, take a breath. In a world that’s seemingly becoming shallower by the day, it’s not an easy process. But follow the above steps and you’ll get there. Take one step today.
Let’s make this a great week.
Weekly Six-Pack
Here are the 6 things to check out this week:
- In 1999, Pete Carroll got fired from the New England Patriots head coaching job and was a broken man. This week, I wrote about the lesson he learned that completely changed his coaching career.
- I stumbled across the book “Steal Like An Artist” during a trip to Stinson Beach, California last weekend. I devoured the book in two days and it’s become one of my favorite books on creativity.
- I enjoyed reading this article on the difference between Amazon and Ben & Jerry’s.
- This week, Gary V dropped a 200+ slide deck that teaches you how to make dozens of pieces of content…per day. He is a wild man.
- Edward Norton has been on a tear with podcasts promoting his new movie. I thought his episode with Tim Ferriss was great and I’m excited to check out Motherless Brooklyn.
- Looking for a movie to rewatch? Give Rounders a go this weekend. It may have the best opening line of any movie ever: “Listen, here’s the thing. If you can’t spot the sucker in your first half-hour at the table, then you’re the sucker.”
Quote of the Week
“I have observed that those who have accomplished the greatest results are those who ‘keep under the body’; are those who never grow excited or lose self-control, but are always calm, self-possessed, patient and polite.”
– Booker T. Washington
