Have you ever been in the middle of doing something important, got distracted by a flashy notification and then got stuck down a rabbit hole? Me too.  It’s almost like we’re all like Dory from Finding Nemo. In a world currently full of notifications and instant gratification, one of the most difficult things for me (and many others) is to stay focused on the task at hand. Jason Khalipa has a solution for this. He calls it an “AMRAP Mentality.” But first, who is Jason and why do we care about this acronym? Jason is a competitive CrossFit athlete, entrepreneur and family man. As an athlete, he won the CrossFit Games in 2008, has held all podium positions at the World Championships and was also named to Team USA 3 times. Currently, Jason is the Founder and CEO of NC Fit, which currently has over 20 locations worldwide. He is a husband (to his high school sweetheart) and father of two children. His daughter, Ava, was diagnosed with Leukemia in early 2016 and is on the verge of defeating the disease. Needless to say, he has a lot going on. So what does AMRAP mean and how do I use this to focus? In CrossFit, an AMRAP workout means “As Many Rounds (or reps) As Possible.”  For example, do as many rounds of 10 push-ups and 10 sit-ups in 5 minutes. Jason extends this philosophy to all areas of life. The goal of the mindset simple – be productive and present in each segment of your life. Jason clearly segments his day between family, business, fitness, and personal growth each with a purposeful focus in which he works tirelessly. Similar to being in the middle of a workout, there are no distractions (have you ever tried to think about anything else while doing burpees? Me neither). He is present and focused on the task at hand. When at home, be at home. When at work, be at work.
“Move fast, breathe slow”.
This philosophy saved me this week.  Like you, I had a lot going on.  I tried to tackle 10,823 things at once instead of the 3 important tasks at hand. Sometimes when I feel overwhelmed, I whisper “AMRAP Mentality” to myself. It’s weird, but it works. Give it a try and watch your productivity soar.
“I want to know that I gave it the best shot I could to reach my full potential and that’s what motivates me every single day.”
